The Crossing of the Great Ditch

The travelers encounter a wide, deep ditch that blocks the yellow brick road. The Scarecrow suggests the Lion could jump across with them on his back. The Lion, though afraid, agrees. He carries the Scarecrow first, then Dorothy with Toto, and finally the Tin Woodman, leaping the chasm each time. After resting, they continue through the forest, which grows darker and more ominous. This event demonstrates the Lion's growing courage and the group's reliance on each other.
