Corpus Christi

1919

Corpus Christi is the location near which the daughter, her father, and her brothers went hunting for a week after Christmas. The trip marks a happy family interval and a turning point before she chooses a different education for herself.

The Hunting Trip

After Christmas, the family traveled to hunt near Corpus Christi. They spent a week there and, by the account, had the time of their lives. The daughter shot her first deer, making the trip a distinct personal milestone as well as a shared family experience.

What Followed

Back in Dallas, the daughter told her father that she would not return to finishing school. Instead, she wanted to go to New York City, stay with Ada Washburn, who was studying at Columbia University, and take courses that would teach her something substantive. Her father had hoped she would complete a finishing-school education, and it took considerable argument to persuade him. The trip near Corpus Christi thus falls just before her successful push toward a more self-directed education.
