Chapter 44, inside the bank

Retrieving the Cryptex

Sophie and Langdon open the crate and find a beautiful rosewood box. Inside is a stone cylinder with lettered dials, which Sophie identifies as a cryptex, a device invented by Leonardo da Vinci. It contains a vial of vinegar that would destroy a papyrus scroll inside if forced open. The box's lid has an inlaid rose, the Priory symbol for the Grail. They realize this is the legendary keystone, a map to the Holy Grail.
