The Fall of Gandalf in Moria

On the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf faces the Balrog to allow the Fellowship to escape. He breaks the bridge, causing the Balrog to fall, but the creature's whip catches Gandalf's legs and drags him into the abyss. Gandalf falls, and the Fellowship believes him to be dead. They escape Moria, grieving their loss.
