Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin return to the Shire to find it under the control of Lotho Sackville-Baggins and his ruffians, who are secretly led by Saruman. The hobbits raise a rebellion and defeat the ruffians at the Battle of Bywater. Saruman is killed by Wormtongue, and the Shire is restored.
