The Pyre of Denethor

Denethor, believing Faramir is dead, prepares to burn himself and his son on a pyre in the Hallows. Gandalf intervenes, saving Faramir, but Denethor, in his madness, sets himself on fire and dies. He had been using a palantír, which Sauron had corrupted, leading to his despair.
