The Fellowship enters the Mines of Moria, seeking a way through the mountains. They discover the tomb of Balin and the fate of his colony. They are attacked by Orcs and a cave-troll, and are forced to flee. Gandalf leads them across the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, where they are confronted by a Balrog, a demon of the ancient world.
