Colwen Grounds, the ancestral seat of the Thropp family, stands in Nest Hardings, Munchkinland, as a symbol of inherited power, privilege, and the burdens of lineage. It is the estate where Melena, Elphaba's mother, was raised in wealth and social expectation, a life she eventually fled by marrying the unionist minister Frex. The mansion's grandeur—with its gilded gates, topiary saints, marble corridors, and ornate private chapel—contrasts sharply with the harsh missionary existence Melena later endured in Rush Margins and Quadling Country, making Colwen Grounds a place of both origin and escape.
History and Family Legacy
Colwen Grounds is the home of the Eminent Thropp, the hereditary title that passes through the female line. Melena, as the granddaughter of the Eminent Thropp, was expected to inherit the title and its attendant responsibilities, a prospect she hated so much that she deliberately sought to have only sons to avoid the burden. The estate's history is intertwined with tragedy: it was at Colwen Grounds that Turtle Heart, the Quadling glassblower and beloved friend of Frex and Melena, was murdered by a mob on the day Nessarose was born. This event, incited by the Clock of the Time Dragon, drove the family to become missionaries in Quadling Country, leaving Colwen Grounds behind for years.
Nessarose's Reign and the Free State of Munchkinland
After the death of the Eminent Thropp, Nessarose, Elphaba's younger sister, inherits the title and becomes the political head of the Free State of Munchkinland following its secession from Oz. Colwen Grounds transforms into the seat of her theocratic government, where she holds audiences, dispenses justice, and rules with a blend of religious fervor and magical power, aided by the enchanted silver shoes given to her by Glinda. The estate becomes a center of both reverence and resentment, as Nessarose's strict unionist policies and her use of sorcery—such as bewitching an axe to harm a woodcutter—alienate many of her subjects. The grounds are later defaced with revolutionary slogans like "SHE WALKED ALL OVER US" and "WALK ALL OVER YOU YOU OLD WITCH," reflecting the popular backlash against her tyranny.
Elphaba's Return and Final Confrontation
Elphaba returns to Colwen Grounds after twelve years of separation, summoned by her father Frex, who hopes she will challenge Nessarose for leadership. During her visit, she witnesses Nessarose's authoritarian rule and frees two Sheep and a Cow that had been bartered as payment for a spell. The sisters' reunion is strained, marked by unresolved resentments and philosophical disagreements about power, faith, and the soul. After Nessarose's death—crushed by a house dropped by a tornado—Colwen Grounds hosts her memorial service, attended by Glinda, Frex, and a representative of the Wizard. It is here that Elphaba has a final, tense audience with the Wizard, who reveals his knowledge of her affair with Fiyero and demands the Grimmerie. The estate, now looted and vandalized by liberated Munchkinlanders, stands as a decaying monument to the family's fractured history and the end of the Thropp Eminence.
