Philosophy Club ritual

The Philosophy Club ritual was a notorious, clandestine orgy held in the basement of a Shiz dive bar, serving as a dark counterpoint to the university's academic life. It was a place where the city's elite and its outcasts—humans, Animals, dwarves, elves, and tiktok creatures—mingled in a haze of alcohol, incense, and forbidden spectacle. The event was a carefully orchestrated piece of degenerate theatre, designed to push participants beyond conventional morality into a state of raw, surrendered experience.

The Venue and the Gatekeepers

The Philosophy Club was the most infamous dive in Shiz, hidden behind a facade of paneled-up windows. Entry was controlled by a crone named Yackle, who sold tickets by type—from simple dancing to the full "works" in the old wine cellars. Avaric, the Margreave of Tenmeadows, led a group of seven university friends—including Boq, Crope, Tibbett, Fiyero, Shenshen, and Pfannee—past Yackle and down uneven brick steps to a dwarf in a purple burnoose. The dwarf explained the house rules: the group would enter a small, dark theatre-in-the-round together, or not at all. The space was divided into six stalls, separated by latticed wood and mirrors, and the air was thick with incense that seemed to split the mind, allowing a more compliant, surrendering self to emerge.

The Ritual Performance

Once the participants were arranged in their stalls, the dwarf, now in a darker hood, appeared on the central stage. He selected three acolytes from different stalls: a woman, a man (Tibbett), and the Tiger. He passed a smoking vial beneath their nostrils, helped them remove their clothes, and bound black blindfolds around their heads. The Tiger paced on all fours, growling softly, while Tibbett was tied to the Tiger's chest and pelvis, hanging beneath its belly like a trussed pig. The woman was set on a sloping stool, and the dwarf tucked something aromatic into her shadowy regions. The dwarf then framed the ritual as a philosophical equation: "Let X be the Unknown God," he said, poking Tibbett. "Let Y be the Dragon of Time in its cave," he added, slapping the Tiger on its flank with a riding crop, forcing it to position its head between the woman's legs. "And let Z be the Kumbric Witch, and let us see if she exists tonight." The crowd leaned in, tearing at their own buttons as the room darkened, and the dwarf concluded, "So now, let the true, clandestine study of knowledge begin."

Consequences and Aftermath

The ritual had a devastating impact on its participants. Tibbett, who was at the center of the performance, was never the same afterward; he later deteriorated into a pale invalid, dying in the Home for the Incurables, where Elphaba, then a maunt, tended to him. The event also marked a turning point for the group of friends, as the night ended with Elphaba and Glinda refusing to join the revelry, instead fleeing to the Emerald City on a desperate mission. The Philosophy Club ritual thus stands as a symbol of the decadence and moral corruption lurking beneath the surface of Shiz's intellectual society, a place where the pursuit of knowledge was perverted into a spectacle of exploitation and cruelty.
