Visit to the Philosophy Club

The Visit to the Philosophy Club is a pivotal, transgressive event in which a group of Shiz University students, led by Avaric, attend a clandestine sex club that combines ritualized debauchery with a grotesque parody of academic inquiry, marking a permanent rupture in their circle and foreshadowing the moral decay of Oz.

Background and Arrival

After the funeral of Ama Clutch, the students gathered at the Peach and Kidneys pub, drinking champagne and saffron cream in her memory. As the evening wore on, Avaric proposed a visit to the Philosophy Club, a notorious dive in Shiz known for its orgiastic entertainments. Elphaba, sensing danger, tried to dissuade Boq and Glinda, urging them to return to Crage Hall. Glinda, newly liberated from her chaperone, insisted on going, but Elphaba physically restrained her, whispering that they were leaving for the Emerald City that very night. Boq, torn between his lingering crush on Glinda and his desire to prove himself, chose to join the others, rationalizing that he needed to "live once in a while." The party that entered the club consisted of Avaric, Boq, Crope, Tibbett, Fiyero, Shenshen, and Pfannee.

The Club's Entrance and Atmosphere

The Philosophy Club was hidden behind a facade of paneled-up windows on a street patrolled by Apes who bounced troublemakers. The entrance was guarded by a crone named Yackle, who sold tickets by category: "Strutting and strumming on the sprung floor, or strumpeting in the old wine cellars." Avaric purchased the full experience for the group. Inside, they descended uneven brick steps to a dwarf in a purple burnoose who examined their tickets and explained the house rules: every hour, the street door was closed and a huge oak door, barred with two monstrous timbers, was opened. The group had to enter together or not at all. The main hall featured a chanteuse singing a send-up of "What Is Oz Without Ozma" while a small band of real elves, hairless and green as sin, tootled a tinny accompaniment. The crowd was the most mixed Boq had ever seen: Animals, humans, dwarfs, elves, and several tiktok things of incomplete or experimental gender.

The Ritual in the Inner Sanctum

When the designated ticket holders were called, Yackle led them through the oak doors into a sloping passage padded in red and blue velvet. They entered a small theatre-in-the-round, where the space for the public was divided into six stalls separated by latticed wood and mirrors. The parties were deliberately mixed up, separating friends and partners. Incense in the air seemed to make Boq's mind split, allowing a tenderer, more complacent mind to emerge. The dwarf, now in a darker hood, appeared on the central stage. He selected three acolytes: a woman, a man (Tibbett), and the Tiger from Boq's stall. He passed a smoking vial beneath their nostrils, helped them remove their clothes, and bound black blindfolds around their heads. The Tiger paced on all fours, growling softly. Tibbett was made to lie on his back, and his wrists were tied around the Tiger's chest, his ankles around the Tiger's pelvis, so he hung beneath the Tiger's belly like a trussed pig. The woman was set on a sloping stool, and the dwarf tucked something aromatic and runny into her shadowy regions. The dwarf then intoned a ritual formula: "Let X be the Unknown God, let Y be the Dragon of Time in its cave, and let Z be the Kumbric Witch, and let us see if she exists tonight." He declared, "Such are the variables in our equation. So now, let the true, clandestine study of knowledge begin."

Consequences and Aftermath

The event had lasting consequences. Tibbett was never the same after the Philosophy Club; he later deteriorated into a pale invalid, unable to shit or piss without help, his skin falling in rags and parchment, and was eventually carted to the Home for the Incurables where Elphaba, then a maunt, tended him. Crope, who had been present, entered an arts auction house and still flitted around the theatrical set, but he and Fiyero did not speak of the night. Boq, who had been desperate to prove himself, was left with a profound unease. The event also marked a fracture in the friend group: Elphaba and Glinda had already departed for the Emerald City, and the others who attended were left to grapple with the experience in silence. Years later, when Elphaba asked Fiyero about the Philosophy Club, he admitted that Tibbett had been ruined by it, and that Crope still flitted around the theatrical set but they did not speak. The club's ritual, with its blasphemous equation of the Unknown God, the Time Dragon, and the Kumbric Witch, served as a dark parody of the academic inquiry the students were supposedly pursuing at Shiz, revealing the pleasure faith's capacity to corrupt and destroy.
