Madame Morrible
Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University, is a master manipulator who wields her institutional authority as a cover for her role as a secret agent of the Wizard of Oz, recruiting promising young women into a covert network of Adepts while orchestrating political repression and murder.
Identity and Introduction
Madame Morrible is introduced as the imposing headmistress of Crage Hall, a women's college at Shiz University. She is described as a "fish-faced upper-class Gillikinese woman" with a "basso profundo" voice, a military posture, and a wardrobe of extravagant gowns bedecked with cloisonné bangles, black jet, and abalone shells. Her manner is simultaneously unctuous and commanding; she greets new arrivals with a crushing grip and speaks in tones that are both ingratiating and threatening. She presents herself as a devoted educator, but her language betrays a deeper agenda: she speaks of "Service to Girls" while treating her students as pawns in a larger political game. Her nickname among the students, "Horrible Morrible," reflects the fear and resentment she inspires.
Role as Headmistress and Manipulator
Madame Morrible uses her position at Crage Hall to identify and cultivate talented young women for the Wizard's secret service. She singles out Elphaba, Glinda, and Nessarose, telling them she has been "charged with a crucial task" essential to "the internal security of Oz." She proposes to make them "Adepts" — anonymous agents who will serve as "secret partners of the highest level of government," placed in different regions of Oz to "restrain the unruly element among our less civilized populations." She claims to be acting on authority "too high to be named" and attempts to bind them to silence with a spell, declaring, "You will not repeat what you hear in this room... you will not want to, you will not choose to, and you will not be able to." When Elphaba rejects the proposal, Madame Morrible later warns the Wizard about her, leading to surveillance of Elphaba's activities.
Complicity in Murder and Repression
Madame Morrible is directly implicated in the murder of Doctor Dillamond, the Goat biologist whose research threatened the Wizard's Banns on Animal Mobility. She admits to having sent her tiktok servant, Grommetik, to the Doctor's lab with "a cheering pot of tea" on the morning of his death, and Grommetik was found with the body. Ama Clutch, who witnessed the scene, confirms before her death that Grommetik was the killer. Madame Morrible also reveals her long collaboration with the Wizard, boasting that she taught him "about breaking the spirits of willful young girls." She is described by the Wizard as "that wonderful aid and helpmeet" who was "always hatching some plot or other." Her influence extends to policy: even in her old age, she continues to advise the Wizard on education policy from her retirement apartment at Crage Hall.
Downfall and Death
Years after leaving Shiz, Elphaba returns to Crage Hall seeking revenge. She finds Madame Morrible in her retirement apartment, already dead — a "sluggish, indifferent corpse" with her hands folded on her belly. Elphaba strikes the body with her broom and then bashes in the skull with a marble trophy, leaving the inscription "IN APPRECIATION OF EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE" as a statement. The Wizard later confirms that Madame Morrible had been the one who warned him about Elphaba and advised him to have her watched, leading to the discovery of her affair with Fiyero. The news of the murder spreads, and the Wizard uses it to send Dorothy and her companions to kill Elphaba, claiming she is "an assassin."
