The road was conceived during the reign of Ozma the Scarcely Beloved, who overtaxed the farmers to begin its construction, a project that remained unfinished for generations. Its purpose was not merely transportation but control: the movement of troops, the regularization of taxes, and the projection of military power. The road's extension into Quadling Country was a direct cause of the devastation of that land, as engineers surveyed for a highway that would cut through the delicate ecosystem, leading to the discovery of ruby deposits and the subsequent exploitation and displacement of the Quadling people. The Road as a Stage for the Final Confrontation
The Yellow Brick Road is the path Dorothy and her companions follow on their journey to the Emerald City. It is along this road that the Wicked Witch of the West first spies on them, hidden in a black willow tree, listening to their gossip and seeing the silver shoes on Dorothy's feet. The road is the setting for the Witch's initial, failed attempt to reclaim the shoes, thwarted by a storm that forces her to take shelter. Later, after the death of Nessarose, the Witch follows the road in a desperate attempt to intercept Dorothy and retrieve the shoes, stopping at a roadside public house to ask for news of the girl. The road thus becomes the final, narrowing corridor of the Witch's life, the path that leads her pursuers to her doorstep at Kiamo Ko.
