Neverdale

Neverdale is a small village on the shores of Lake Chorge in Gillikin, best known as the location of Caprice-in-the-Pines, the summer house where Pfannee and Shenshen hosted a holiday that became a turning point in the relationships among the young women of Crage Hall and their male companions from Briscoe Hall. The village is reached by coach from Shiz, followed by a short walk or hansom cab ride of a mile or two past a bridge. It is a place of calm, sweet air and pleasant summer leisure, with a house covered in roses and ivy, yet it also becomes the stage for a calculated act of social cruelty that exposes the fragility of the friendships within the group.

The Summer Holiday and the Forged Invitation

In the summer after their first year at Shiz, Glinda, Pfannee, and Shenshen took a house at Neverdale called Caprice-in-the-Pines. Glinda, bored with the company of her society friends, wrote a letter to Elphaba proposing she visit for a few days before school began, saying she "do veryspecially hope" Elphaba could come "for reasons I dare not write." However, this letter was a forgery written by Pfannee, who intended to humiliate both Glinda and Elphaba for sport. When Elphaba arrived at Neverdale accompanied by Boq and Avaric, the deception was revealed, and Pfannee collapsed on the floor of the gazebo in helpless laughter. Glinda, mortified, declared she had been "set up to be mortified" and that she had "half a mind to kick" Pfannee. The incident caused a deep rift, with Elphaba retreating to her room for a full day and Glinda considering leaving the house altogether.

The Consequences of the Deception

The forged invitation had lasting consequences for the group's dynamics. Boq, who had insisted Elphaba accept the invitation, was forced to confront the reality that Glinda had not written it. In the aftermath, Glinda admitted to Boq that despite herself, she found him "a little sweet" and "a little charming," though she also concluded "you're little!" — a reference to his Munchkinlander stature. The kiss that followed marked a brief romantic interlude, but the overall atmosphere at Neverdale was poisoned by Pfannee's cruelty. Elphaba, Glinda, Boq, and Ama Clutch made the six-hour journey back to Shiz with fewer than a dozen remarks among them, while Avaric stayed behind to "disport himself with Pfannee and Shenshen." The experience contributed to Glinda's growing disillusionment with her shallow social circle and her gradual movement toward a genuine friendship with Elphaba.

Narrative Significance

Neverdale functions as a threshold space where the superficial social order of Crage Hall is briefly suspended, only to be violently reasserted through Pfannee's trick. The village's idyllic setting — a house "dear, covered in roses and ivy" — contrasts sharply with the emotional damage inflicted there. The episode marks the beginning of the end for Glinda's comfortable alignment with the wealthy, snobbish girls of her class, and it deepens the bond between Elphaba and Boq, who had conspired to make the trip happen. Neverdale is also the site where the group's "charmed circle" of friends — Elphaba, Glinda, Boq, Avaric, and later Fiyero, Crope, and Tibbett — begins to form, as the shared experience of humiliation and recovery creates a foundation of trust that will sustain them through the more serious crises of their university years.
