They appear in the narrative only once, but at a moment of profound significance: Elphaba crosses them on her solitary flight back to Kiamo Ko after her failed reunion with her sister Nessarose and her father Frex at Colwen Grounds. Geography and Setting

To the west lies the Vinkus, where Elphaba has made her home at Kiamo Ko; to the east lies the Corn Basket, the agricultural heartland of Munchkinland that has recently seceded from the Wizard's rule under Nessarose's leadership. Elphaba's Crossing and Reflection

Elphaba crosses the Madeleines on her return journey from Colwen Grounds, having refused Nessarose's plea to stay and help govern the newly independent Munchkinland. The crossing is not described in physical detail; instead, it is the occasion for an extended meditation on the nature of power, evil, and the unseen forces that may govern the world. As she traverses the hills, Elphaba thinks obsessively about the "character" of the world and whether it "seemed to refer to itself." She questions the existence of the Unnamed God, the reality of evil, and the possibility that she, Nessarose, and Glinda have been living their entire adult lives as pawns of Madame Morrible's Adept scheme. The Madeleines become a space of intellectual and spiritual crisis, where the Witch's atheism and her political disillusionment converge.

Narrative Significance

The Madeleines are the setting for Elphaba's most sustained philosophical inquiry in the latter part of the novel. It is here that she recalls Doctor Dillamond's scientific work and wonders if she is now old enough to understand what he was discovering. The hills thus serve as a bridge between her youthful activism at Shiz and her present isolation in the Vinkus. The crossing also marks a decisive turn away from any possibility of reconciliation with her family or involvement in Munchkinland's revolution. After the Madeleines, Elphaba's trajectory is fixed: she will return to Kiamo Ko, bury herself in the Grimmerie, and await the arrival of Dorothy and her companions. The hills are the last place where she seriously considers whether she might still act to change the world, and the answer she arrives at is no.
