Stonespar End

Stonespar End is a way station in Munchkinland that marks the boundary between the settled, prosperous farmlands of Nest Hardings and the remote, drought-stricken district of Wend Hardings. It is the point where the coach-and-four from Colwen Grounds stops, and where travelers must transfer to local transport or be met by a private carriage. For Nanny, summoned from her retirement by Melena's panicked letter, Stonespar End is the threshold she crosses twice: first when Frex collects her to bring her to the minister's cottage, and again when she leaves, having concluded she can do nothing more for the green infant Elphaba.

Geography and Function

Stonespar End lies on the route between the Thropp family seat at Colwen Grounds and the hamlet of Rush Margins. It is the terminus of the coach-and-four service; beyond it, the road deteriorates into tracks suitable only for a single carriage. The inn at Stonespar End provides lodging for travelers and a place to change horses. When Nanny first arrives, Frex meets her there with a carriage to convey her the rest of the way to the cottage. The journey from Stonespar End to the minister's lodge takes them through the red-leafed pearlfruit trees that line the road, past the increasingly impoverished landscape of Wend Hardings.

Narrative Significance

Stonespar End functions as a narrative hinge between two worlds. On Nanny's first journey, it is the point where she learns the truth about Elphaba's condition: Frex, weeping, tells her the baby is "green as moss." On her return journey, it is where Nanny departs with her valise, having failed to find a cure for the child's color or to persuade Frex to consider sorcery. She carries with her the green glass bottle labeled "MIRACLE ELIXIR" that she found among Melena's medicines, along with three of Frex's prayer beads and the ivory crochet hook she had stolen. The way station thus marks both the arrival of help and the departure of hope, a liminal space where the family's crisis is acknowledged but not resolved.

The Inn at Stonespar End

The inn itself is never described in detail, but it serves as a place of transit and waiting. When Nanny returns to Colwen Grounds, she stays at the inn overnight before continuing her journey. It is also the place where Frex, on his way to collect Nanny, stops to compose himself before facing her questions. The inn's function is purely transitional: it is a place where characters pause between one world and another, never a destination in itself.
