Lake Chorge
Lake Chorge, a large body of water in the Gillikin region, serves as the setting for a pivotal summer episode during the students' break from Shiz University. The lake is described as a "mighty field of blue" and is bordered by the village of Neverdale, where the resort villa Caprice-in-the-Pines is located. The house is covered in roses and ivy, and its gazebo, a six-sided structure of unstripped logs, overlooks the water. The lake's pleasant atmosphere and the villa's charm make it a desirable retreat for the wealthy young women of Crage Hall.
The Forged Invitation and the Awkward Visit
During the summer, Pfannee, Shenshen, and Milla take a house on the shores of Lake Chorge. Galinda, who is staying with them, writes a letter to Elphaba, expressing a sincere hope that she will visit. However, Pfannee intercepts this letter and, as a cruel joke, forges a new one in Galinda's name, making the invitation seem more urgent and personal. Elphaba, persuaded by Boq, travels to Lake Chorge with Boq and Avaric, accompanied by Madame Morrible's tiktok servant, Grommetik. Upon their arrival at the gazebo, the deception is revealed when Galinda, shocked and humiliated, denies having written the invitation. Pfannee collapses in laughter, admitting to the forgery. The incident exposes the casual cruelty of the social circle and leaves Elphaba feeling deeply humiliated and isolated; she retreats to her room for a day.
Consequences and a Shift in Relationships
The Lake Chorge episode has lasting consequences for the characters. Galinda is mortified by the trick played on her and her unwitting role in it, which deepens her growing disillusionment with her shallow friends. The event also serves as a catalyst for her relationship with Boq. After the initial tension, Boq corners Galinda on the porch of the villa, and she admits, "despite myself I think you're a little sweet. You're a little sweet and you're a little charming and you're a little maddening and you're a little habit-forming." This confession leads to their first kiss. The trip ends with Elphaba, Galinda, Boq, and Grommetik making the six-hour journey back to Shiz in near silence, the social fabric of their group permanently altered by the experience at the lake.
