On the night of Lurlinemas Eve, as snow falls over the city, Fiyero watches Elphaba walk along this road, noting that she "struck out sideways, away from the Palace district, cutting through the small, fashionable district of Goldhaven" before reaching her destination. Elphaba's Departure

After her failed audience with the Wizard, during which she presented Doctor Dillamond's research on Animal consciousness and was dismissed with a cryptic quotation from the Oziad, Elphaba does not return to Shiz. Instead, she says goodbye to Glinda at the carriage and disappears into the crowds of the Emerald City. Shin Road is the route she would have taken had she chosen to go back, but she deliberately avoids it, choosing instead to go "underground" in the capital. Fiyero's Surveillance

On Lurlinemas Eve, Fiyero follows Elphaba along Shin Road as she makes her way toward the Lady's Mystique theatre, where Madame Morrible is scheduled to attend an oratorio. He observes her from a distance, noting her disguise of "long dark skirts, like some sort of a religious woman" and a "tall wide-brimmed hat with a crown like a cone." The road provides the setting for his anxious surveillance, as he struggles to reconcile his love for her with his knowledge that she is about to commit an act of violence. The snow that falls along Shin Road that night obscures vision and heightens the tension, making the road a stage for the moral drama unfolding between them.
