It is the birthplace of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the stage for her family's history, from her father Frex's ministry in the impoverished outback to her sister Nessarose's rise and fall as a religious tyrant. The Thropp family is the most powerful in Munchkinland, holding the hereditary title of "Eminent Thropp" which passes through the female line . The family seat is Colwen Grounds, a grand mansion in Nest Hardings, which stands in stark contrast to the humble minister's lodge where Elphaba grows up. The family's political influence is significant; the Eminent Thropp once raised a militia and tore up the Yellow Brick Road to resist the Ozma Regent's expansion . This legacy of defiance is inherited by Elphaba's sister, Nessarose, who, after inheriting the title, leads Munchkinland to secede from the Wizard's rule, declaring it the Free State of Munchkinland . The Wizard's army is garrisoned in the region, and his agents, like Madame Morrible, seek to recruit Munchkinlander Adepts to control the population . The drought that plagues Wend Hardings is a constant source of suffering, and the Wizard's failure to address it fuels resentment. The region's resources, like the ruby deposits in Quadling Country to the south, are exploited by the Emerald City, and the local population is marginalized .
