It is the setting for the formative years of Elphaba, Glinda, and Nessarose, and the place where the political struggles of the nation—particularly the oppression of Animals and the rise of the Wizard's authoritarianism—first intrude upon their lives. The university is a microcosm of Oz's social hierarchies and a crucible for the ideological battles that will define the characters' adult lives.

Structure and Social Life

Shiz is composed of several colleges, including Crage Hall for women, Briscoe Hall for men, and Three Queens College. The university is a place of rigid social stratification, where students are sorted by wealth, family name, and provincial origin. Glinda, arriving from Frottica, is acutely aware of these distinctions, and her initial horror at being assigned to room with the green-skinned Elphaba reflects the prejudices of the institution. The students' social lives revolve around chaperoned outings, poetry soirees, and illicit gatherings at pubs like the Boar and Fennel and the Peach and Kidneys. The Amas, or chaperones, play a key role in managing the young women's lives, and the arrival of Ama Clutch with a nail in her foot sets off a chain of events that forces Glinda into an unwanted roommate situation. Madame Morrible, the Headmistress of Crage Hall, is a manipulative figure who uses her position to recruit promising young women as secret agents, or "Adepts," for the Wizard. Other faculty include the bumbling sorcery instructor Miss Greyling and the mumbling Doctor Nikidik, whose demonstration of an "Extract of Biological Intention" nearly kills a Vinkus student. The university's original charter was strictly unionist, but it now teaches sorcery, a fact that Nessarose, a devout unionist, finds troubling.

Political Awakening and Resistance

Shiz is the site of Elphaba's political awakening. Through her work as a secretary for Doctor Dillamond, she becomes deeply involved in the Animal rights movement. She, along with Boq, Crope, and Tibbett, secretly researches the origins of the distinction between Animals and animals, hoping to provide scientific evidence to overturn the Wizard's Banns on Animal Mobility. The university's libraries, particularly those of Briscoe Hall and Three Queens, become sites of clandestine research. The murder of Doctor Dillamond, which Elphaba believes was orchestrated by Madame Morrible and her tiktok servant Grommetik, convinces her that the university is complicit in the Wizard's crimes. This event, combined with Madame Morrible's proposal to make her an Adept, drives Elphaba to abandon her studies and flee to the Emerald City, severing her ties with Shiz and her friends.

Legacy and Transformation

After Elphaba's departure, Shiz continues to function as a center of learning, but its character changes. The university thrives in the war-alert economy, with new industrial buildings and a monument to the Empire. The Sir Chuffrey and Lady Glinda Conservatory of Music and the Theatrical Arts is built on the grounds of Crage Hall. Years later, Elphaba returns to Shiz to murder Madame Morrible, finding the Head in her retirement apartment in the "Doddery" building. The university, once a place of youthful idealism and intellectual ferment, has become a cog in the Wizard's machine, a symbol of how institutions can be co-opted by authoritarian power. The memory of Shiz, however, remains a powerful touchstone for the characters, a place where their fates were first intertwined and where the seeds of their future struggles were sown.
