Arrival and First Impressions

For the newly arrived Galinda, Railway Square is an overwhelming spectacle of urban life. The terminus is a cacophony of "everyone hustling on business, laughing and hurrying and kissing, dodging carriages," a stark contrast to her quiet rural home in Frottica. The buildings of the square, "brownstone and bluestone and covered with vine and moss," steam softly in the sunlight, creating an atmosphere of vibrant, almost exotic energy. It is here that Galinda first encounters the reality of a multi-species society, seeing a quartet of Tsebras at an outdoor cafe, an Elephant directing traffic, and a Tiger in religious garb. This sensory overload, combined with her frosty train journey with Doctor Dillamond, marks her first real confrontation with the world beyond her provincial upbringing.

A Hub for Conspiracy and Friendship

Railway Square becomes the regular meeting place for Elphaba, Boq, and their friends Crope and Tibbett during their covert summer research for Doctor Dillamond. They gather at a cafe in the square to exchange findings from the university libraries, their work a secret campaign against the Wizard's oppressive Banns on Animal Mobility. Elphaba, swathed in a brown cloak and veil to avoid detection, meets them there, and the square's anonymity provides cover for their dangerous intellectual pursuits. It is in this cafe that Boq first proposes using his friend Avaric as a chaperone for a trip to Lake Chorge, a plan that leads to a pivotal, humiliating episode for Galinda. The square is thus the stage for both the deepening of their friendship and the escalation of their political engagement.
