that evening
Montag reads poetry to the women
Mildred invites her friends, Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles, over to watch television. Montag, frustrated by their shallow conversation, decides to read them a poem from his stolen book. He reads Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach," which speaks of the loss of faith and the darkness of the world. The poem deeply affects Mrs. Phelps, who begins to cry, while Mrs. Bowles is angry and offended. The women leave in distress, and Montag realizes the power of literature to evoke genuine emotion, but also the danger of challenging the status quo.
