Rescue of Victor Frankenstein
The crew discovers another sledge on an ice floe, with a single emaciated man. They bring him aboard, and Walton learns that the man is Victor Frankenstein, a European. Frankenstein is initially weak and silent, but he gradually recovers. He is deeply melancholy and seems haunted by a terrible secret. Walton is immediately drawn to him, seeing in him the friend he has always sought.
