when Victor was fifteen
The Lightning Strike
A violent thunderstorm destroys a beautiful oak tree near Victor's home. A visiting natural philosopher explains the principles of electricity and galvanism, which shatters Victor's faith in the old alchemists. He briefly turns to mathematics, but the experience plants the seed for his later scientific pursuits, as he becomes fascinated by the hidden powers of nature.
