The Monster Reads Paradise Lost
The monster finds a copy of Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives, and The Sorrows of Werter. He reads them with intense emotion. He identifies with Adam, but also with Satan, feeling himself to be a fallen creature, excluded from the joys of others. These books shape his understanding of the world and his place in it as an outcast.
