Christmas Day, morning

Christmas Morning in the City

Scrooge and the Spirit stand in the city streets on Christmas morning. The weather is severe, but the people are jovial, shovelling snow from the housetops and exchanging facetious snowballs. The poulterers' and grocers' shops are radiant with Christmas fare. The Spirit sprinkles incense from his torch on the dinners being carried to the bakers' shops, and when there are angry words between some dinner-carriers, he sheds a few drops of water from it, restoring their good humour. Scrooge asks about the peculiar flavour of the torch, and the Spirit replies that it is his own, and that it applies to any kindly given dinner, but most to a poor one because it needs it most.
