Christmas night, during the First Spirit's visit
Journey to Scrooge's Boyhood
The Ghost of Christmas Past clasps Scrooge by the arm and, despite his protests, they pass through the wall and stand upon an open country road. Scrooge recognizes the place as where he was bred as a boy. They walk along the road, and Scrooge recognizes every gate, post, and tree. They see jocund travellers on ponies and in gigs, all shouting 'Merry Christmas' to each other. Scrooge is filled with inexplicable gladness at the sight, his cold eye glistening and his heart leaping up.
