Ignorance and Want Revealed

As the night wears on, the Ghost of Christmas Present grows older. Scrooge notices its hair is grey, and the Spirit confirms that its life ends that night at midnight. The Spirit then shows Scrooge two wretched, abject children hiding beneath its robe: a boy named Ignorance and a girl named Want. The Spirit warns Scrooge to beware of them both, but most of all the boy, for on his brow is written 'Doom,' unless the writing be erased. When Scrooge asks if they have no refuge or resource, the Spirit turns on him with his own words: 'Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?'
