Christmas Eve, night, in Scrooge's chambers
The Bell and the Clanking Noise
As Scrooge sits brooding over the fire, a disused bell in the room begins to swing softly, then rings out loudly, followed by every bell in the house. The bells cease, and a clanking noise is heard deep below, as if someone is dragging a heavy chain over the casks in the wine merchant's cellar. The cellar door flies open, and the noise comes up the stairs, straight towards Scrooge's door. Despite his attempts to dismiss it as 'humbug,' his colour changes as the sound passes through the heavy door into the room.
