Scrooge's Own Grave

The Spirit leads Scrooge to a churchyard, overrun with grass and weeds, and points down to a neglected grave. Scrooge, trembling, asks if these are the shadows of things that Will be or things that May be only. The Spirit remains immovable. Scrooge creeps towards the grave and reads upon the stone his own name: Ebenezer Scrooge. He cries out, 'Am I that man who lay upon the bed?' and falls to his knees, pleading for a chance to change. He promises to honour Christmas in his heart and to live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirit's hand trembles, and Scrooge, in his agony, catches the spectral hand, but the Spirit repulses him and shrinks, collapsing into a bedpost.
