Christmas Eve, night, in Scrooge's chambers
Scrooge Checks His Rooms
After entering his chambers, Scrooge, with a moment's irresolution, checks behind the door and then walks through his rooms to ensure all is right. He examines the sitting-room, bedroom, and lumber-room, finding nobody under the table, sofa, or bed, and nobody in the closet or his dressing-gown. Satisfied, he double-locks himself in, a departure from his custom, and puts on his dressing-gown, slippers, and nightcap before sitting down before a very low fire to take his gruel.
