Christmas Eve, night, in Scrooge's chambers

Marley's Ghost Appears to Scrooge

Marley's Ghost enters Scrooge's room, the same face as in life, with his pigtail, waistcoat, tights, and boots. He drags a long, heavy chain made of cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses, clasped about his middle. His body is transparent, and Scrooge can see the two buttons on his coat behind. Scrooge, though terrified, tries to maintain his composure, even joking that the Ghost might be an undigested bit of beef. The Ghost, however, raises a frightful cry and shakes its chain, causing Scrooge to fall to his knees and beg for mercy.
