Scrooge Awakens to the Second Spirit
Scrooge awakens in his own bedroom, exhausted, and hears the bell strike one again. He is prepared for the second messenger, but when no shape appears, he is taken with a violent fit of trembling. He notices a blaze of ruddy light streaming from the adjoining room and, tracing it, shuffles to the door. A strange voice calls him by name and bids him enter. He obeys and finds his own room transformed into a kind of grove, hung with living green, holly, mistletoe, and ivy, with a mighty blaze roaring up the chimney. Heaped on the floor is a throne of food: turkeys, geese, game, poultry, brawn, great joints of meat, sucking-pigs, sausages, mince-pies, plum-puddings, oysters, chestnuts, apples, oranges, pears, twelfth-cakes, and bowls of punch. Upon this couch sits a jolly Giant, the Ghost of Christmas Present.
