Anne Refuses to Return to School

Humiliated by her punishment, Anne refuses to go back to school. Mr. Phillips compounds the insult by forcing her to sit next to Gilbert. Anne is mortified and decides to stay home. Marilla, after consulting Mrs. Lynde, decides to let Anne stay home for a while, hoping she will cool off. This marks the beginning of Anne's self-imposed exile from school and her deepening hatred for Gilbert.
