during the drive to White Sands
Anne's History
Marilla drives Anne to White Sands to see Mrs. Spencer and rectify the mistake. During the drive, Anne tells Marilla the story of her life: her parents' death, her harsh upbringing by Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Hammond, and her time in the orphanage. Marilla, listening, feels a growing pity for the child and begins to understand her imaginative and talkative nature as a coping mechanism. This revelation softens Marilla's heart and makes her reconsider sending Anne back.
