The Flower-Wreathed Hat

Marilla learns from Mrs. Lynde that Anne wore a hat decorated with roses and buttercups to church the previous Sunday. Marilla scolds Anne for her 'ridiculous' behavior. Anne is genuinely sorry, explaining she thought the flowers were pretty. Marilla then tells Anne that Diana Barry has returned home and suggests they visit. This incident shows Anne's innocent but unconventional nature and sets the stage for her meeting with Diana.
