Mrs. Lynde's Visit

Mrs. Rachel Lynde, recovered from an illness, visits Green Gables to inspect the new orphan. She bluntly criticizes Anne's appearance, calling her 'skinny and homely' with 'red hair.' Anne, enraged, flies into a temper, shouting at Mrs. Lynde and refusing to apologize. Marilla is horrified and sends Anne to her room. This incident establishes Anne's fiery temper and her sensitivity about her appearance, and it creates a conflict with the town's most influential gossip.
