that afternoon at Mrs. Spencer's house
The Offer from Mrs. Blewett
At Mrs. Spencer's, Marilla learns the mistake was due to a miscommunication. Mrs. Spencer suggests that Mrs. Peter Blewett, a harsh woman, might take Anne. Marilla is repulsed by the idea of handing Anne over to such a woman. When Mrs. Blewett herself arrives and expresses interest in taking Anne, Marilla, seeing Anne's terror, impulsively decides to take Anne home and discuss it with Matthew. This is the turning point where Marilla's conscience prevents her from abandoning Anne.
