Tumnus Confesses His Betrayal

After tea and music, Lucy realizes she must return home. Mr. Tumnus suddenly bursts into tears and confesses that he is in the pay of the White Witch, who has cast an eternal winter over Narnia. He was ordered to kidnap any human he met and hand them over to her. He had intended to lull Lucy to sleep and then report her, but he cannot bring himself to betray her. Lucy forgives him, and he quickly leads her back to the lamppost, warning her of the Witch's spies. She returns through the wardrobe to the spare room.
