Immediately after the gala performance
Raoul Recognizes Christine
Raoul de Chagny, the young viscount, rushes to Christine's dressing-room after her fainting spell. He kneels and kisses her hand, reminding her that he is the little boy who once rescued her scarf from the sea. Christine, however, does not seem to recognize him and laughs, which confuses and hurts Raoul. The doctor and the maid are present, and Christine asks to be left alone. Raoul, feeling rejected, leaves but later overhears a man's voice in her dressing-room saying, 'Christine, you must love me!' and Christine replying, 'When I sing only for you!' This revelation fills Raoul with jealousy and confusion.
