The managers receive a letter from the ghost, giving an ultimatum: he demands his box, that Christine Daae sing Margarita, that Mme. Giry be reinstated, and that his monthly allowance be paid. If not, he threatens that the performance will be cursed. The managers are furious and refuse to comply, but they are also worried. They decide to go ahead with the performance, with Carlotta singing Margarita, and they plan to watch from Box Five.
