The Secret Engagement

Christine and Raoul meet daily in her dressing-room, where they play at being engaged. They are happy, but Christine is often nervous and fearful. She tells Raoul that they must flee soon, but she insists on singing one more time. She also tells him about Erik, the man behind the voice, and his terrible ugliness. Raoul is determined to save her, and they plan to escape after the next performance.
