Jim encounters a strange, ragged man in the woods—Ben Gunn, who has been marooned on the island for three years. Ben tells Jim that he was on Flint's ship and knows about the treasure. He asks if Jim can get him some cheese and promises to help Jim's party. Jim tells Ben about the situation, and Ben reveals that he has a boat hidden. They hear the cannon and run towards the stockade.
