The First Blow
Silver, enraged by Tom's defiance, kills him with his crutch and knife. Jim, hidden nearby, witnesses the murder and flees in terror. He runs through the woods, fearing for his life. He hears the sound of a cannon and later sees the Union Jack flying over the stockade, indicating that his friends have taken refuge there.
