As Jim and Israel Hands sail the Hispaniola into North Inlet, Hands tries to kill Jim with a dirk. Jim climbs the rigging to escape, and Hands follows. Jim shoots him with both pistols, and Hands falls into the water and drowns. Jim is wounded in the shoulder but manages to beach the ship.
