At the Coles' dinner party
A pianoforte arrives for Jane Fairfax
At the Coles' party, Mrs. Cole mentions that a beautiful new pianoforte has been delivered to Miss Bates's house for Jane Fairfax. The gift is anonymous, and everyone assumes it is from Colonel Campbell. Emma, however, becomes suspicious and, in conversation with Frank Churchill, begins to speculate that the gift might be from Mr. Dixon, whom she suspects of being in love with Jane. Frank encourages her suspicions, and they share a private joke at Jane's expense.
