Emma apologizes to Miss Bates

Filled with genuine contrition, Emma goes to Miss Bates's house early the next morning to apologize for her rudeness. She finds Jane Fairfax looking very ill and learns that she has accepted a position as a governess. Emma's sympathy for Jane is awakened, and she tries to offer help, but Jane politely but firmly refuses. Emma leaves feeling that her attempts at kindness are too little, too late.
