Mr. Elton returns with his bride

Mr. Elton returns to Highbury with his new wife, the former Augusta Hawkins. Mrs. Elton is a vain, vulgar, and self-important woman who immediately tries to assert her dominance in the local society. She is condescending to everyone, including Emma, and takes a particular interest in patronizing Jane Fairfax. Emma is immediately repelled by her, and her dislike grows with every subsequent meeting.
