Shortly after the letter
Jane Fairfax arrives in Highbury
Jane Fairfax, an orphan who was raised and educated by Colonel Campbell's family, arrives in Highbury to stay with her grandmother and aunt. She is elegant, accomplished, and beautiful, but also very reserved. Emma, despite her initial prejudice, is struck by Jane's grace and feels a pang of guilt for her past dislike. However, Jane's reserve soon reasserts itself, and Emma's old feelings of irritation return, especially when Jane refuses to discuss her time in Weymouth or her acquaintance with Frank Churchill.
