Emma visits Miss Bates

Emma and Harriet call on Mrs. Bates and Miss Bates. Emma finds the visit tedious, as Miss Bates is a garrulous and trivial talker. However, the visit becomes interesting when Miss Bates produces a letter from her niece, Jane Fairfax, announcing that she will soon be coming to stay in Highbury for three months. Emma is not pleased, as she finds Jane Fairfax cold and reserved, and dislikes the fuss everyone makes over her.
