After Frank Churchill's departure
Emma believes she is in love
In the days following Frank's departure, Emma feels listless and bored. She concludes that she must be a little in love with him. However, she also finds that she can imagine refusing him, and she resolves that their attachment will ultimately subside into friendship. She is not deeply unhappy, which suggests to her that her feelings are not as strong as she thought. She begins to consider the possibility of transferring Frank's affections to Harriet.
